Essential Functions for the Life Skills Counselor:

  • Meeting with youth/clients to model and practice independent living skills, such as academic and career planning, priority setting, money management, and health and wellness.
  • Representing our program and agency professionally, establishing positive community relationships.
  • Coordinating with community contacts, including referral/funding sources, children and youth agencies, landlords, probation, school personnel, employers, and more.
  • Being available for on-call rotation and addressing any crisis or critical incident according to agency protocols.
  • Participating in agency training and workshops, completing required hours and annual training.

To be considered for the Life Skills Counselor, your minimum qualifications should include:

  • An associate degree in social work or related field.
  • 5 years of experience working with youth and families.
  • Sound judgment and knowledge of adolescent development and behavior.
  • Strong organizational and multitasking skills.
  • Must have and maintain a valid driver's license, including vehicle insurance and inspection on any vehicle used for daily work and transportation of clients.
  • Must receive a passing score on annual motor vehicle clearance to be eligible to operate agency vehicles.
  • Ability to transport youth to and attend in-person Independent Living Groups a minimum of 1x per week till 7 PM and assist in transports to/from groups.
  • Never have been convicted of any prohibited criminal or child abuse offense.

Although not required, the following qualifications would be preferred: 

  • A BS/BA in social work or related field.
  • One year of related experience in the field.

Physical Requirements for the Life Skills Counselor:

  • Sedentary work that primarily involves sitting/standing. X Occasionally
  • Light work that includes moving objects up to 20 pounds. X Occasionally
  • Ability to navigate stairs is highly preferred (as some locations are not ADA compliant. X Occasionally
  • Moving from one worksite to another X rare
