Essential Functions:

  • Staffing
    • Recruit, interview, and hire qualified staff for openings, including specific area coordinators, adventure team staff, lifeguards, and general counselors.
  • Maintain a diverse staff that is culturally sensitive and competent.
    • Organize staff orientation and ensure staff successfully completes all required trainings.
  • Conduct regular staff meetings to provide education, agency information and support to help build a sense of trust, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
  • Provide verbal and written feedback to staff including commendations and disciplinary and performance issues as appropriate.
    • Review staff time sheets on a bi-weekly basis, and review and approve/disapprove program staff requests for vacation, personal time and out of agency training requests.
  • Be present and available to help manage crisis situations and process with staff, including coverage during overnight camps
  • Program Development and Delivery
  • Assist in pre-summer planning sessions.
  • Develop a daily schedule for staff and campers to follow.
    • Oversee and review the area coordinators lessons and activities to ensure that they are aligned with the appropriate content and program outcomes.
  • Ensure that camp staff has the resources and materials to effectively run their activities
  • Camp Management
  • Oversee day-to-day operations of summer camp by providing for the care, safety, and supervision of the campers, staff, and physical camp property and amenities.
  • Assist in managing the overall camp budget.
  • Ensure that Valley Youth House policies, rules, and procedures are being followed by staff and campers.
  • Coordinate maintenance needs to Camp Manager and/or Maintenance team
  • Initiate Camp Emergency Action Plan in emergency situations
  • Camp Communication and Marketing
  • Assist in developing and delivering marketing strategies to promote camp to potential campers and funding sources.
  • Develop community partnerships with organizations and individuals who could help enhance summer programs.
  • Maintain proper communication with parents of campers to provide updated information and feedback regarding campers' experience at camp.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A mature individual with the ability to identify with and adapt to the goals and philosophies of Positive Youth Development and embraces the core values of Camp Fowler.
  • Ability to stay at camp during overnight camp sessions
  • Knowledge of adolescent/young adult development and behavior.
  • Creative thinker who is a solution-oriented problem-solver.
  • Ability to cooperatively work on a team.
  • Never have been convicted of any prohibited criminal or child abuse offense.

Physical Requirements:

  • Constant movement around the camp.
  • Frequent standing and sitting.
  • Ability to work outside during the summer months.
  • Frequent moving of objects up to 20 pounds.
  • Occasional moving of object over 20 pounds.
