Camp Lifeguard (Seasonal)

Valley Youth House empowers and strengthens the lives of children, youth and families through inclusive programming that builds resilience and fosters growth and independence.

We are currently looking for a qualified applicant to fill the following position: Camp Lifeguard (Seasonal) ($15hr)June 10th- August 10th

Job Description:

  • Lifeguard staff are responsible for facilitating and monitoring all the pool activities at camp. Lifeguarding includes competence in the knowledge and skills of American Red Cross Lifeguarding. Lifeguard schedules rotate daily.

Essential Functions:

  • Maintain safety of all people in and around the pool area.
  • Conduct swim tests to assess the swimming level of potential swimmers.
  • Remain alert and use all senses while guarding.
  • Perform first aid and emergency care treatment when required.
  • Work as a team with other lifeguards..
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the pool area.
  • Assign and delegate tasks to aquatic observers.
  • Complete all necessary injury reports.
  • Set up the waterfront area for specific activities according to the weekly program schedule.
  • Weekly testing of swimming water; record results and report to supervisor.

Key Functions:

  • Model behaviors and choices that reflect the camp's core values.
  • Participate in management and staff meetings.
  • Participate enthusiastically in all camp activities, planning and leading those as assigned.
  • Address and report any crisis or critical incident as defined by agency and/or county, state or federal regulations according to the agency's formalized practice and protocol.
  • Maintain highly organized and thorough records.

Other Duties:

  • Understand and adhere to Valley Youth House policies, practices and procedures.
  •  Attend both external and internal agency trainings and workshops and complete and pass all required trainings as set forth in the funder and licensing regulations as required.
  • Complete any other tasks that relate to the overall success of the summer camp program.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A mature individual with the ability to identify with and adapt to the goals and philosophies of Positive Youth Development and embraces the core values of Camp Fowler.
  • Current Red Cross Lifeguard Certificate, or be willing to complete required trainings to earn certificate.
  • Professional experience working with children from diverse backgrounds.
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal. 
  • Enthusiasm, patience, and self-control
  • Experience supervising staff in a professional setting.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior lifeguarding experience
  • Previous summer camp experience
  • A sense of humor.

Physical Requirements: 

  • Constant movement around the pool area.
  • Ability to pass the physical standards for the lifeguard training (including swimming and rescues).
  •  Frequent standing and sitting. 
  • Ability to work outside during the summer months.
  • Frequent moving of objects up to 20 pounds.
