Camp Counselors (Seasonal)

Valley Youth House empowers and strengthens the lives of children, youth and families through inclusive programming that builds resilience and fosters growth and independence.

We are currently looking for a qualified applicant to fill the following position: Camp Counselors (Seasonal) (Summer Stipend $3,850) June 10th- August 10th.


Job Description: 

  • Camp Counselors play a key role in the success of our summer camp by providing leadership and guidance for a group of campers, ensuring a quality experience to children and parents that focuses on Camp Fowler's core values.  Camp Counselors create positive, nurturing relationships with children, while building cooperative relationships with parents/caregivers. Camp counselors help guide campers through planned activities and help engage campers in down and/or transition time. During overnight camp weeks, counselors get paired up with co-counselors to supervise a cabin of 10-12 campers.

Essential Functions:

  • Supervise activities of children, including but not limited to, games, art, swimming, and outside activities.
  • Provide an enjoyable experience for each camper.
  • Supervise campers in cabins on overnight camp weeks.
  • Set a good example in promptness, manners, language, appearance, and health.
  • Set a good example in respect and care for the facilities and the out-of-doors.
  • Create and maintain group unity by making everyone feel a sense of belonging.
  • Contact parents of campers as needed during camp to maintain good public relations.
  •  Check group attendance each morning.
  •  Keep safety of campers in mind at all times. Campers are never to be left unattended.
  •  Know whereabouts of the group at all times, including early morning arrivals, bus, camp,
  • Maintain positive relations with parents and other staff
  • Assist in maintaining and cleaning of assigned areas.
  • Report all program changes and equipment needs to Summer Program Director.
  • Assist Activity Coordinators while participating in their activity.

Key Functions

  • Model behaviors and choices that reflect the camp's core values.
  • Participate in management and staff meetings.
  • Participate enthusiastically in all camp activities, planning and leading those as assigned.
  • Address and report any crisis or critical incident as defined by agency and/or county, state or federal regulations according to the agency's formalized practice and protocol.
  • Maintain highly organized and thorough records.

Other Duties:

  • Understand and adhere to Valley Youth House policies, practices and procedures.
  •  Attend both external and internal agency trainings and workshops and complete and pass all required trainings as set forth in the funder and licensing regulations as required.
  • Complete any other tasks that relate to the overall success of the summer camp program

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A mature individual with the ability to identify with and adapt to the goals and philosophies of Positive Youth Development and embraces the core values of Camp Fowler.
  • Professional experience working with children from diverse backgrounds.
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal. 
  • Enthusiasm, patience, and self-control
  • Experience supervising staff in a professional setting.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Group facilitation experience
  • Previous summer camp experience
  • A sense of humor.

Physical Requirements:

  • Constant movement around the camp.
  • Ability to physically belay participants and assist in rescue efforts on the challenge course.
  •  Frequent standing and sitting. 
  • Ability to work outside during the summer months.
  • Frequent moving of objects up to 20 pounds
